About Us
St Katharine’s Primary
School is just outside Marlborough in the heart of the
ancient forest of Savernake. It opened as a school in 1869
for workers' children from the Savernake estate. Its school
buildings and facilities have been greatly enhanced since
then and we now have up to date technology, an innovative
and diverse curriculum and many awards which demonstrate our
dedication to improving the quality of education we provide
for our children.
We have a large playing field and substantial play area
which children often play on long after school has finished!
We are about to extend our playground around our magnificent
Oak tree and have just had a bench built around the tree so
that some of our lessons can take place outside in the
hotter summer months.
We have three classes
and are lucky to have 4 teaching assistants who work with us
during the week to provide high quality support. Our new
classroom, Oak class, was opened in February 2006 .
We
are closely linked to the church at St Katharine’s and
promote Christian values, self-esteem and a respect for
others. Our Vicar leads an assembly each week and works
within our classes afterwards; hearing children read,
playing maths games and getting to know our children
individually. The church is on the other side of our
playground and is used for many services and lessons during
the school year. Children also requested that we have school
assembly in the Church once a month which is now an
important part of our school timetable.
We work in close
partnership with all of our parents and regularly have them
into school to hear children read, lead cooking classes,
sewing of costumes and general help in lesson time. We have
an active PTA who run many activities for the
school and
wider community throughout the year, including a hugely
successful Christmas Bazaar, busy summer fete and cracking
bonfire night party.
We lay great emphasis
on enriching children’s learning by ensuring that lessons cover
all learning styles. Lessons are carefully planned to
enhance each child’s potential and we constantly strive to
ensure every child leaves St Katharine’s a confident and
well rounded individual. Lessons on poetry may, for example,
involve a walk in the forest, sitting in a clearing to mind
map language and returning to the classroom to write poetry
or act it out. |
