International
School
Eurotales

What is our
project? We
are linked to 6 other European schools, funded and supported
through the EU Comenius Socrates project for school
partnerships. Teachers from the seven countries met in
Vimmerby, Sweden back in 2006 to set up a project to raise
children’s awareness of European myths, legends and local
heritage and raise Literacy standards.
Our project allows
teachers and pupils to travel abroad as well as host group
visits, all paid for through EU/British Council funding.
What’s our
theme? Our
project is called ‘Eurotales’ and is divided into 3 parts:
Your castle, our
story
Each country paired with another and swapped details
(photos, brochures and children’s work) about a significant
local place of interest. Children in the receiving country
then wrote stories, drew pictures, made models and sang
songs about the location they’d been given. We exchanged
this work in England where children from each country
presented the work to one another.:
UK to
Slovenia,
Slovenia to Sweden
Sweden to UK
France to Germany
Germany to Turkey
Turkey to Spain
Spain to France
The Real Tale
Now it was time to write the real tale – what really
happened/is the myth or legend for our own countries place
of interest. Children read stories, designed Powerpoints,
wrote books and drew pictures of their local place of
interest. We exchanged this work in Sweden where children
from each country presented work to the country that had
originally written about their feature so that they could
take the ‘real story’ back to their school.
D.E. Tales (Different
European Tales)
This is the 3rd and final big part of our project and we
will all be working on this next year. This time, we are
moving away from our own local area and beginning to share a
traditional story/myth/legend with ALL of the other
countries. We will each write a section of a play and a
song, which will be performed in each country and videoed.
This will then be put together for each country to act out
and watch back on video. Expect high drama!!
What have we
done? We
took the opportunity to make more links than just our story
writing. We have collectively made many things together and
will continue to do so in the last year of our project.
